The Rum House Caribbean Taqueria

Somehow, this was my first visit to The Rum House.  Back in early August, Jeremy’s parents came in to town from Upstate New York for their summertime visit.  While they were here, we ate at some pretty tasty restaurants.  This of course was one of those places.

The Rum House is conveniently located in Uptown New Orleans on Magazine Street right before Louisiana Avenue.  For locals, it’s easy to get to from most other parts of the city.  For tourists and out-of-towners staying downtown, you can easily cab it or take the Magazine Street bus.  The St. Charles Avenue street car is an option, but you’d have to walk down from St. Charles Avenue to Magazine Street, which is about five blocks away, but in this part of town, the walk down to Magazine can be a pretty one with views of large old homes, especially if you get off the street car a few blocks early.

Anyway, we visited The Rum House on a Saturday afternoon around 4pm.  The place was packed with people.  However, we easily found a table for seven people – the restaurant is HUGE.  I ordered the biggest glass of iced tea on the planet because it was so very hot out.  We then proceeded to the food, which was so very tasty.  Awesome flavors.  You can see my meal below.

Have you been to The Rum House?  How’d you like it?

Avocado and Mango dip from the Rum House

We started our meal with the avocado mango dip and also a side of queso blanco (not pictured). The avocado mango dip was basically guacamole but with the added bonus of MANGO. Yum. The plate also included sides of salsa and pickled veggies, which I always love. Great way to start our meal.

Taco plate from the Rum House

For my entree, I ordered the two taco, two side combo plate. My tacos were the Calypso Beef (flank steak, guacamole and lime cream) and the Chili Glazed Shrimp (fried shrimp, pepper relish and rum chili glaze). Sides were mango coconut rice and fried plantains. Everything was very tasty and cooked really well. I especially love plantains – a special treat around these parts in New Orleans.
