Strawberry Mint Julep Recipe
Today we bring you the third and final strawberry cocktail for this week. I can’t believe the week’s already almost over, and we’re at our third and frankly, most delicious cocktail – the Strawberry Mint Julep. With Kentucky Derby day fast approaching (May 4th), I figured it’s time to get a julep on this blog. So we can all sit back and sip, sip, sip away our Derby day.
While I’m not an avid horse racing fan, I do appreciate it as a sport and as a cultural activity. I actually live a stone’s throw away from the Fair Grounds Race Course here in New Orleans, and I probably saw more races this year than I have in my whole life combined. My nephew loves to visit the track – for the races and also for the elevator, escalator and all the fun things there for a 4-year-old to explore. Hence, we visited often this racing season.
As you may or may not know, Kentucky Derby day is a pretty big deal. It’s the culmination of a two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival. The actual race has been run every year since 1875. All manner of celebrities and well-to-do’s from the four corners of our great nation gather annually in at Churchill Downs for this historic race. Big hats abound, and the drink of choice for the day is the Mint Julep.
Packed with mint and bourbon whisky, the Mint Julep is a powerful cocktail. The crushed ice helps to mellow the concoction as it melts, but this drink is not for the faint of heart. I do find the strawberries help to temper the bourbon just a little, but make no mistake, a mint julep is a sipping drink. It’s meant to be bourbon first, mint second.
On Wednesday, our mojito recipe introduced the idea of muddling in cocktails. A Mint Julep also involves muddling ingredients, but this time it happens right inside the glass. Super easy. Once the simple syrup, strawberries and mint leaves are sufficiently muddled, simply top off with bourbon, ice and garnishes. Super easy.
Seriously, that’s it. This is a simple cocktail that’s worth its salt. Make one for yourself this weekend or on Derby weekend as you relax. Sip away the afternoon and dream of actually being at the Kentucky Derby with your big hat and the glamorous crowds. Or you can just be glad you’re in the quiet solitude of home. Whatever you enjoy best.
Now let’s get to that recipe…
