Okay so most of you probably know this already, but I’m a pretty big football fan. NFL football to be exact, not college level football. I don’t want to argue the merits of each, and I basically settle on “to each his own.” I don’t care if other people are way into college football – good for them. My enjoyment comes at the NFL level. The professional level.

But sometimes I am conflicted over my love of football. It is a very violent sport in which men get hurt on a weekly basis. This part is very disturbing and troubling to me. What I enjoy about the sport though is the planning, the strategy, the pure athleticism of these top athletes. And I know that the guys playing on the field love the game, too. They live and breathe football. And that makes me happy.

While I know there’s much more the NFL can be doing to keep players safer, I am glad that they are taking baby steps in that direction. I will be the first to admit their effort thus far is controversial and doesn’t go nearly far enough. But it is a start. And I am hopeful that those who are able to hold the NFL’s feet to the fire on this issue keep doing so. Because I want to have NFL for a long time. I want to see this great game continued to be played. But making it safer is something I also support. And if that means some of the “action” is lost. That’s just something I am willing to accept.

Today marks our first “Game Day” recipe for this year. You can see our existing game day recipes here (I did quite a few last year). Basically, on each Friday during football season, I’ll introduce another game day treat for you. Some of them will be healthy. Some will be not so healthy. But all of them will be delicious and something you’ll want to make a part of your game day recipe rotation.

This week’s game day recipe is a little high brow, but sometimes that’s just what’s needed on game day. Not every week has to be nachos and beers and greasy foods. Some Sundays we can just take a minute and enjoy the finer things in life. Like this vodka spritzer recipe. Made with home-infused vodka. And some mighty delicious Ruffino Prosecco. Now this is the life!

This drink actually couldn’t be easier to make. It’s really just mixing three ingredients then sipping to your heart’s content. However, though. However. If you want to make this exactly as I have, you will need to infuse the vodka ahead of time. It takes about five days and you can see the recipe and process here. If you just feel like substituting your own personal favorite vodka, fine by me. I just want you to be happy. Really, I do.

So let’s talk a little about Ruffino Prosecco. They are the ones making this post possible by sending me a bottle of their fine beverage. I was first introduced to Ruffino at Tales of the Cocktail. It has a bright, fruity flavor with fine bubbles. I love how fragrant this stuff is. It’s great to just put your nose close and sniff. Kinda tickles, too! Overall, this Prosecco is crisp, clean and delicate. The fine bubbles lightly caress your palate as you drink. Pretty perfect if you ask me.

Ruffino Prosecco

I wanted to make a cocktail with this Prosecco so I created this vodka spritzer since I already had delicious, home-infused vodka on my hands. But after I used what I needed for the cocktail, I saved the rest of this bubbly gold for me and Jeremy so we could drink merrily and enjoy the delicious fruity flavor of this Prosecco on its own. It was fantastic. So this is not only a great mixer, but it’s even better to have on its own for a slow evening sip or two.

Peach and Basil Vodka Spritzer Recipe

This vodka spritzer recipe features Ruffino Prosecco and a vodka infused with fresh peaches and basil. This drink is light, refreshing and satisfying!

Ingredients:

  • Rocks glass filled with crushed ice
  • 1 fluid ounce peach and basil vodka
  • 1 fluid ounce Ruffino Prosecco
  • 1 fluid ounce club soda
  • Optional garnish: sliced peach
  • Optional garnish: fresh basil sprig

Method:

  1. Add add all of the liquids to the glass filled with crushed ice.
  2. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Garnish with peach slice and/or fresh basil as desired.
