How to Peel Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is a wonderfully tasty member of the squash family. It’s inherently sweet but lends itself well to both savory and sweet dishes. While it’s versatile and infinitely useful in the kitchen, it’s not always obvious to newcomers how to peel butternut squash.

Below I’ve documented the steps of how I peel and clean butternut squash. In this exercise, the final pieces are large diced. If you prefer a finer dice, simply cut each slice of squash into smaller pieces. Unfortunately, the pieces won’t be very uniform, but in the end, that shouldn’t affect cooking time or evenness too much.

How to Peel Butternut Squash:

1. Cut the top off the butternut squash and then the bottom to level it out.

2. Next cut the squash in half near where the squash starts to widen.

3. Stand each side up and carefully cut the flesh straight down to the board.

4. Cut both pieces in half vertically.

5. The bottom will have seeds, the top will not. Scoop the seeds out of the bottom.

6. Slice both pieces vertically then horizontally to create cubes of squash.

7. Use as needed in recipes.
