Bean Soup with Barley Recipe

Recently my sister gave me a bag of Hurst’s HamBeens Cajun 15 Bean Soup. I had heard of this soup mix before but had never tried it.   Basically, it’s a bag of 15 different beans with a small seasoning packet.  Below is my version of the recipe on the back of the bag.  I did not use tomatoes as it suggests (among other ingredients), but this could be tasty with tomatoes added in.  The recipe is very simple but the seasoning packet, pork stock and tasso really give this soup an amazing amount of flavor.

This is quite an easy and tasty dish.  Hope you enjoy!

Yield: 6 servings

1 onion, diced
3 celery ribs, diced

Kosher salt & cayenne pepper, to taste

  1. Set aside flavor packet for later use in the recipe.
  2. Place rinsed beans and barley in a large pot with the 3 quarts of water.
  3. Bring to a rapid boil then reduce heat and continue to cook 60 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. After 60 minutes, add in the seasoning ingredients, flavor packet, stock and tasso.
