Frangelico-Spiked Iced Coffee Recipe: Made with French Market Coffee

Coffee. Oh it seems as though I’ve loved it forever. But, it’s really only been about 8 years or so. I remember my first foray into coffee very clearly. It all started with Starbucks lattes. No sugar. I haven’t really ever used much sugar in my coffee. But the love affair started with heavy milk and some pretty dang dark espresso. Those were the days. So care free, so green…

But that phase really didn’t last long. I quickly moved on from those milky lattes. I moved into actually buying a coffee maker. And brewing coffee at home. At first it was an occasional thing. Something I did more because I wanted to, less because I felt the need. But slowly over time, something clicked. It was no longer something I did here and there. Coffee became a permanent part of my life. A daily ritual that I indulge in. My companion.

And for a while, it was all hot coffee. I thought I had exactly everything I needed. But then. Then my eyes were opened. Via some co-workers, I discovered the existence and joys of iced coffee. And not just any iced coffee, but cold brewed iced coffee. I’m a purist when it comes to iced coffee. No hot brewed iced coffee. That’s just a bitter mess of flavor disaster if you ask me. Cold brewing is where it’s at. It’s basically steeping the coffee. It’s a much more low-acid, gentler flavored type of coffee.

Then probably sometime around this time last year, iced coffee become my primary coffee source. Even over the winter, I continued with my iced coffee (bundled in sweaters, if needed). So when I was drinking it hot, I had gotten to where I drank it black. Basic black coffee. I still prefer my hot coffee that way. But when I drink cold coffee, I enjoy a bit of milk. I made the recipe below with cow’s milk. But I’ve recently been experimenting with almond, coconut and soy milks, too. All my milks are either organic or Non-GMO (of course). I’m still not sure what’s my fave, but it’s really hard to top whole cow’s milk.

If you know me, you know that I love all things local. And now you know that I also love coffee. So when a local coffee brand here in New Orleans asked me to sample some of their products, I was happy to oblige. French Market Coffee is a very old well-respected coffee brand here in the city – they’ve been around for 120 years! But recently they’ve grown. They’re bringing the flavor of New Orleans to more places in the ol’ US of A. They just might already be in a city near you. And you can always buy online! I love that.

I was super jazzed about the gift box I got from French Market Coffee as well. It included two full-sized samples of coffee (dark roast and chicory blend – the two flagship roasts for them), but it also included K-cup samples, a snazzy t-shirt (which you can’t see in that photo – sorry), a cool mug and a handy-dandy USB port coffee warmer. Since I don’t drink much hot coffee, I gave that to my brother-in-law for his daily office coffee. It’s good to share the wealth! Also, I’m going to bring the K-cups to Aunt Pam’s the next time we have a gathering here. I don’t have a single-cup brewing system, but she does. Woo!

So whenever I work with brands, I always try to develop recipes around their products. Sure, you probably want to know how I like this particular brand or that. But I always feel it most useful for you that I use the products and show you what they’re capable of. So I took my sample of dark roast French Market Coffee, and I cold brewed it because that’s how I like to do coffee. But then I did something different. I added a shot of Frangelico liqueur to make it into a coffee cocktail. A delicious, hazelnut flavored spiked iced coffee recipe.

As I suggested before, cold brewing coffee is so easy. All it requires is time. About 12 hours to be exact. Because when you “cold brew,” you’re actually steeping the coffee grinds so that the room temperature water leeches the delicious coffee flavor from the ground beans. It’s along the lines of how you make sun tea, but there’s no sun. Or tea. My favorite way to cold brew coffee at home is to use my Toddy Cold Brew System. This makes the process very simple. It’s neat, clean and basically hassle free. Sure you could do it manually with no brewing system, but the straining part is messy and a pain. The Toddy system makes it simple.

And so I know I said I like my coffee unsweetened, but I know not everyone is that way. I’ve included a suggestion for simple syrup or agave nectar for sweetening in the recipe below. I try to consider how each person might like their drink, especially where coffee and cocktails are concerned. If you prefer a non-sweet drink, go ahead and skip the sweetener. Personally, I like the hazelnut flavor imparted by the Frangelico, and I don’t really need the extra sweetener. But I’ll say, I did enjoy it when I drank the test cocktail…. Because you know SOMEONE has to drink the test cocktails around here! Waste not, want not.

Frangelico-Spiked Iced Coffee Recipe

This cold-brewed iced coffee recipe is spiked with Frangelico liqueur for a delicious hazelnut flavor. It makes the perfect brunch cocktail!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold-brewed coffee
  • 1/4 cup + 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon simple syrup or Agave nectar
  • 1 fluid ounce Frangelico
  • Ice

Method:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, stir and serve.

  • I have loved coffee since I could eat food. Coffee yogurt. Coffee ice cream. Sneaking sips of my parents coffee in the morning.

    It became a real problem (2 cups per day and caffeine headaches) several years ago. Now I have it as a treat once per week or so. And it tastes amazing!

    • That’s a great way to manage the caffeine problem. I try not to have more than two cups per day – lately it’s only been one in the morning. And I keep it before noon. Coffee’s my main caffeine source these days so I have found a good balance that works for me. Thankfully πŸ™‚
