With Thanksgiving just around the corner (two days away !!!), I figured I’d give you one more cocktail for your holiday table. Today’s cocktail is brought to you by Frangelico. We’re partnering this winter to bring you two holiday season-centered recipes. This summer I published their Cleopatra cocktail recipe, but the two recipes I’ll be publishing in the next month are cocktails I’ve created on my own. I think you’ll love them.

If you’ve been reading Culicurious for any amount of time now, you know that I’m a cocktail enthusiast. More than that, I am a big fan of Frangelico. My love affair started with Frangelico many years ago when I was a wee pastry chef’s assistant back in my college years. It’s a liqueur I’ve always kept near and dear to my heart. It’s versatility is boundless, and it makes not only fantastic cocktails, but also works well as a flavoring agent in baked goods, like my delicious Frangelico brownie recipe.

For those of you who might not be familiar with Frangelico, I’ll start at the beginning. It’s a delicious hazelnut flavored liqueur that hails from the Piedmont region of Italy. Said to have been created by a monk named Fra. (Friar) Angelico, this flavorful and complex concoction has been around for over 300 years. That’s a long time, and the quality and precision in their distillation process is evident.

Of course, my favorite part about Frangelico is its flavor. Before I tried a Frangelico, I thought perhaps the hazelnut flavor might be too strong. I’ve had some hazelnut flavored coffees, and they’ve just been a little overwhelming. But not Frangelico. Although it has an intense aroma, the flavor is pleasantly mild. The bottle is dark-colored, but the liqueur inside is a clear, light amber-caramel color. Hints of cinnamon, cocoa and vanilla are also evident in the flavor profile – which brings me to our cocktail today: Cane + Nuts.

Cane + Nuts is a simple cocktail that mixes spiced rum, Frangelico and Coca-Cola together to create a complex yet mellow cocktail. The combination of the spiced rum and Frangelico is a beautiful thing. The flavors of each marry to form a new, even more delicious concoction. I swear I tasted banana notes in there somewhere. It was so good. The cocktail is a 50/50 ratio of liquor to cola, but it doesn’t taste “alcohol-y” at all. It’s well-balanced.

My favorite cocktails are those that can be whipped up in a minute or two. This one lives up to that. You don’t even need any other equipment besides a rocks glass and something to stir with. Really, you can’t get more simple (or delicious) than this drink. And in the end, to me, that’s what holiday imbibing should be about – a simple, tasty drink that relaxes you. Holidays can be stressful enough. Your drink shouldn’t add to that. Having one of these Cane + Nuts cocktails this holiday season will put a smile on your face and a little more pep in your step.

Cane + Nuts - A Frangelico Cocktail Recipe

Cane + Nuts is a simple, delicious Frangelico cocktail recipe that also includes spiced rum and Coca-Cola. Great holiday drink!

Ingredients:

  • Rocks glass filled with ice
  • 1 fluid ounce spiced rum
  • 1 fluid ounce Frangelico
  • 2 fluid ounces Coca-Cola
  • Garnish: Filthy cherries
  • Optional garnish: 2 Luxardo cherries

Method:

  1. Add both liquors to the rocks glass filled with ice then top with Coca-Cola.
  2. Stir gently with a cocktail stirrer, and if desired, garnish with two Luxardo cherries.
  3. Sip and enjoy!
